Boyington was an outstanding leader and fighter in VMF-214. He scored 22 victories with the Marines, plus six with the AVG. Under his command, VMF-214 won 94 victories against the Japanese. At thirty-one, he was ten years older than most of his pilots, earning him the nickname "Pappy". On November 26, 1943, Boyington poses in the cockpit of the Corsair "White 86" for a publicity photo. The Japanese flag "kill markings" were applied so hastily that some were accidentally reversed. One wonders whether the aircraft was called "Lucybelle" or "Lulubelle", as the name is partially obscured in the final photo. Boyington was recognized as the finest ace in the American armed forces, and when he was shot down on a mission over Rabaul on January 3, 1944, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. But Boyington survived Japanese captivity, and President Truman presented him with the Medal of Honor on October 5, 1945.

General Characteristics, Armament, & Performance details are located inside the flap of the box.

World War II Warbirds

The World War II "Warbirds" range presents affordable, ready made diecast models of World War II military aircraft in 1:72 scale.
