Description
Northrop F-5A Freedom Fighter
USAF, no. 63-8381, 1960s
HM 1:72 HA33007
The Northrop F-5A Freedom Fighter was a lightweight, supersonic fighter designed in the late 1950s as an affordable, easy-to-maintain aircraft for allied air forces. Powered by two General Electric J85 engines, it was capable of Mach 1.4 and equipped with two 20mm cannons and a modest weapons load. Its simplicity, reliability, and low operating cost made it highly attractive to smaller nations under the U.S. Military Assistance Program. The F-5A proved effective in both air defense and ground attack roles. Though modest compared to larger fighters, its agility and ruggedness gave it a lasting legacy worldwide well into the 21st century.
Northrop F-5A Freedom Fighter
Designed in part to meet the US Navy's demand for a low-cost, low-maintenance fighter to operate from escort carriers, the F-5 first flew on July 30, 1959. Development of the F-5 continued even after the withdrawal of naval escort carriers, and the aircraft eventually evolved into the light supersonic “Freedom Fighter”, serving US allies during the Cold War and as a supersonic trainer in the USA. The second-generation F-5 (“Tiger II”) also served US allies, but because it was small and maneuverable like a MiG, it was also used by the US military as a trainer and “aggressor”, acting as the opposing force during military wargames.
