The Mi-24 helicopter, a Soviet-designed combat helicopter, played an important role in Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Russian and Ukrainian forces deployed the Mi-24 for air support, troop transport and attacking ground targets. Early in the conflict, the Mi-24 was used in major battles such as the assault on Hostomel airport near Kiev, where it provided essential air support. The Ukrainian Mi-24 fleet countered Russian advances by targeting armored vehicles and troop positions. The helicopter's robust design and firepower made it a valuable asset in the intense fighting around Kiev and other key areas during the invasion.

The Mil Mi-24 (NATO reporting name: Hind) is a large combat helicopter, attack helicopter and low-capacity eight-passenger troop transport. It is produced by the Mil Helicopter Plant in Moscow and was introduced by the Soviet Air Force in 1972. The helicopter is currently used by 58 countries.

In NATO circles, the export versions, Mi-25 and Mi-35, are designated by a letter suffix as "Hind D" and "Hind E". Soviet pilots called the Mi-24 the "flying tank", a term used historically with the famous Soviet Il-2 Shturmovik armored ground attack aircraft of the Second World War. Other common unofficial nicknames were "Galina" (or "Galya"), "Crocodile", because of the helicopter's camouflage scheme, and "Drinking Glass", because of the flat glass plates surrounding the cockpits of earlier Mi-24 variants.
