The Kegworth air disaster — Flight BD092
On 8 January 1989, British Midland Flight 92, travelling from London Heathrow to Belfast, experienced a fan blade failure in its left engine. During the emergency, the crew mistakenly shut down the functioning right engine. As the damaged left engine subsequently lost power on approach to East Midlands Airport, the aircraft crashed near the M1 motorway at Kegworth. 47 of the 126 people aboard died, and many others were injured.
The investigation highlighted important issues in engine indications, crew diagnosis, communication and survivability. The accident contributed to subsequent improvements in training, aircraft safety procedures and cabin safety.
Promotional setting
The Passion Diecast artwork depicts London Heathrow Airport (LHR) in a 1990s-inspired setting as requested for the collectible. This is an illustrative setting, not a depiction of the aircraft's operational status in the 1990s: the actual G-OBME was destroyed in 1989.
