German Panzer II Ausf. F 7.Pz. Rgt., 10.Pz. Div., Tunisia 1943,
Diecast Model
Krupp Sd.Kfz.121 Panzer II F
Designed to fill a gap in the production of the Panzer III and Panzer IV tanks, which were lagging behind in development, the Panzer II or Panzerkampfwagen II was first tested in October 1935. Larger than its predecessor, the Panzer I, the Panzer II was Germany's main battle tank until early 1941, but it was nevertheless quite ineffective in combat. It was really better suited for use as a light reconnaissance tank, and is particularly important because of the role it played in the development of more powerful Panzers thereafter. Panzer IIs were withdrawn from the front lines in 1942.
The 10th Panzer Division was formed in Prague in March 1939 as part of Army Group North. The 10th PD then fought in the Battle of France, the siege of Calais, Operation Barbarossa and the Battle of Tunisia. After Operation Torch in 1942, the division was sent to Tunisia where it arrived in December as part of the 5th Panzer Army. In the following months the 10th Panzer Division faced the British and the Americans. At first the Germans inflicted heavy losses, but the tide finally turned, forcing the Germans to surrender on 12 May 1943.
