The US Navy's 41 (VF-41) Black Aces fighter squadron was commissioned on 1 June 1945 on F4U Corsairs. The squadron went through the F2H Banshee, F3H Demon and F-4 Phantom II before moving to the F-14 Tomcat in 1976. The Black Aces deployed to the USS Nimitz on several occasions, often sharing the deck with the F-14s of VF-84 Jolly Rogers. It was during one of these cruises, on August 19, 1981, that the Black Aces Tomcat shot down two Libyan Su-22 Fitters over the Gulf of Sidra. This was the first ever combat incident involving American Tomcats. The squadron's last cruise with the F-14 was in 2001 aboard the USS Enterprise. Upon its return, VF-41 transitioned to the F/A-18F Super Hornet.

Grumman F-14A Tomcat

Designed to carry the formidable AIM-54 Phoenix long-range missile, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat made its first flight on December 21, 1970. Made famous by the Hollywood movie Top Gun, the F-14 replaced the F-4 Phantom II as the US Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter. Its design includes a variable-geometry wing that can tilt back for high-speed supersonic intercepts and forward for improved positioning in air-to-air combat. Nicknamed the "Bombcat," the F-14 spent much of its later career in an air-to-ground role, with the Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) system.
