Northrop P-61A Black Widow
The Black Widow, the United States' first aircraft specifically designed for night fighters, first flew on May 21, 1942. The P-61 was equipped with four forward-firing 20 mm cannons and a a dorsal turret housing four .50 caliber machine guns. Radar equipment located in the nose of the aircraft allowed the crew to locate and attack enemy aircraft in complete darkness. The twin boom housed two turbocharged Pratt & Whitney engines and was joined aft by a large plan and twin rudder formation. The pilot sat in the main fuselage, the gunner right behind him and the radar operator aft of the pod.
