The Egyptian Air Force received its first MiG-17s in 1956, deploying them against the Israeli invasion of the Sinai during the early stages of the Suez Crisis. The MiG-17 continued in use in the Yom Kippur War, fought from October 6 to 25, 1973 between Israel and a coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria.

Designed as an enhanced version of the MiG-15 jet fighter, the MiG-17 was first flown on January 13th, 1950.
