On January 15, 2009, an Airbus A320 on US Airways flight 1549 lost both engines after the turbojet engines ingested several birds shortly after takeoff from New York's LaGuardia airport. Given their position in relation to available airports and their low altitude, pilots Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger and Jeffrey Skiles decided to glide the plane until it ditched on the Hudson River, near Midtown Manhattan. The 155 people on board were rescued by nearby boats. No deaths were reported, but 100 people were injured, some seriously. Less than four minutes elapsed between the bird's impact and the water landing.

US Airways is a former American airline. It serves more than 92 destinations in the United States, Mexico, the West Indies and Europe, with 3,400 departures per day. Founded in 1939, it disappeared following its merger on October 16, 2015 with American Airlines.
