Junkers Ju 87G Stuka

The Junkers Ju-87G1, marked as GS+MH and operated by 10.(Pz)/SG 1, played a critical role during the intense fighting on the Eastern Front in mid-1944. By this time, the Soviet forces were mounting powerful offensives, and the Wehrmacht was increasingly reliant on specialized units like the Stuka tank-busters to counter the overwhelming tide of Soviet armor. The Ju-87G1, a modification of the Ju-87D model, was equipped with two 37mm BK 37 cannons under its wings, allowing it to destroy heavily armored Soviet tanks such as the T-34.
In June 1944, during the battles around Dubno in Ukraine, the Ju-87G1 was a vital asset for the German forces as they attempted to halt the Soviet advance. Operating in coordinated missions, pilots like those of 10.(Pz)/SG 1 targeted Soviet tank columns and supply lines, providing critical support to embattled ground troops. Despite facing formidable challenges, including well-coordinated Soviet anti-aircraft defenses and an increasingly dominant Red Air Force, the Ju-87G1 proved effective in its role. Its slow speed and vulnerable airframe were offset by the devastating impact of its cannons, which were capable of penetrating the armor of most Soviet tanks.

The battles in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic underscored the limitations of the Ju-87G1 in contested airspace, but its effectiveness as a specialized ground-attack aircraft remained unmatched. The bravery and skill of the Stuka crews, combined with the rugged reliability of the aircraft, ensured its place in history as one of the most feared weapons of the war. The markings of GS+MH stand as a testament to the dedicated men and machines that fought in one of history’s most challenging aerial battlefields.
