Wild Weasels 69-7253, 561 TFS/35 TFW, George AFB, 1991 /

HOBBY MASTER  1:72  HA19075

“Wild Weasels” are specialized aircraft tasked with the Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD), clearing safe air corridors for larger strike packages flying behind them. Their mission is to lure enemy radar and anti-aircraft systems into locking onto them, allowing the Wild Weasel — or accompanying aircraft — to launch anti-radiation missiles that track radar emissions back to their source and destroy the threat.

The 561st Tactical Fighter Squadron (561st TFS) was based at George Air Force Base in California. In 1991, the squadron deployed to Bahrain in support of Operation Desert Storm, where it played a critical role in securing safe air corridors for coalition aircraft. Following Desert Storm, the squadron continued active operations until it was officially inactivated in 1996.

McDonnell Douglas F-4C Phantom II

Designed as a fleet defense fighter for the US Navy, the F-4 Phantom was first flown on May 27, 1958. This twin-engine, long-range all-weather fighter/bomber proved highly adaptable and served in the Marine Corps and the US Air Force as well as in the Navy. During the Vietnam War, it was the principal air superiority fighter for the Navy and the Air Force and was also used for reconnaissance and ground attack. The Phantom continued to serve well into the 1970s and 1980s and even flew missions during the first Gulf War. Finally phased out by the F-14, F-16 and F/A-18, the Phantom was retired in 1996.
