Ethiopian Airlines is Ethiopia's national carrier and Africa's largest airline, based at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa. Founded in 1945 with the assistance of TWA (Trans World Airlines), it operated its first commercial flight to Cairo in 1946. It has become a model of success on the African continent and has been a member of the Star Alliance since 2011. It operates one of the youngest and most modern fleets in Africa, serving more than 130 international destinations around the world.

The Boeing 777-9, registered as ET-BBX, is Boeing’s largest long-range twin-engine jet, featuring retractable wingtips and 10% greater fuel efficiency compared to previous versions. It is particularly well-suited for operating out of the high-altitude hub of Addis Ababa. In March 2024, Ethiopian Airlines signed an agreement with Boeing to purchase eight firm Boeing 777-9 aircraft (with options for 12 more), becoming the very first African customer of the 777X family.
