The Belgian Air Force (Air Component of the Belgian Armed Forces) was founded in 1909 as the Military Aviation Engineering Corps and became an independent force in 1949. It is responsible for defending Belgian airspace, participating in NATO missions, and conducting humanitarian and military transport operations. It is primarily based at sites such as Florennes and Kleine-Brogel (fighter) and Melsbroek (transport).

The Airbus A400M ATLAS, registration CT-02, is assigned to the 20th Squadron of the 15th Air Transport Wing, based in Melsbroek, as part of a binational Belgian-Luxembourg unit. It is a versatile, four-turboprop military transport aircraft designed for both tactical and strategic missions (short runways, heavy loads, and long distances). The code CT-02 designates Belgium’s first aircraft of this type; CT-01 belongs to neighboring Luxembourg.
