HMS Hood Admiral-class Battlecruiser Royal Navy Battle of the Denmark Strait, May 1941

In May 1941, the battle cruiser HMS Hood and the battleship HMS Prince of Wales were ordered to intercept the German battleship Bismarck, which was on its way to attack convoys in the Atlantic. On May 24, 1941, the Hood was struck by several German shells at the beginning of the Battle of the Strait of Denmark and exploded; the loss had a profound effect on the British. Prime Minister Winston Churchill who ordered the Royal Navy to sink the Bismarck, and they executed his command on May 26 and 27. The Royal Navy conducted two investigations into the reasons for the vessel's rapid disappearance. The first, held very soon after the loss of the ship, concluded that Hood's aft store had exploded after one of the Bismarck's artillery shells had penetrated the ship's armour. A second investigation took place after complaints were received that the first commission had not taken into account other explanations, such as the explosion of the ship's torpedoes. Although it is much more thorough than the first council, he agrees with the conclusion of the first council.
