During the Second World War, 170 American HMC M8s were supplied to the Free French forces who used them with their reconnaissance units on the western front of the war in Europe. In late 1944, the M8 HMC was named the M8 Scott in honour of American General Winfield Scott. After the Second World War, the French used the M8 HMC during the Indochina War until 1954, then the equipment left behind was used in the early 1960s by South Vietnamese forces.
