The Liaoning is a type 001 Chinese aircraft carrier. It was the first aircraft carrier to enter service in the naval surface force of the People's Liberation Army Navy and is classified as a training ship, intended to allow the navy to experiment, train and familiarize itself with aircraft carrier operations.
Originally planned in 1985 for the Soviet Navy as the Kuznetsov Riga class aircraft cruiser, it was launched on 4 December 1988 and renamed Varyag in 1990. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, construction was stopped and the ship was put up for sale by Ukraine. The stripped hull was purchased in 1998 and towed to the Dalian shipyard in north-eastern China.
The vessel was rebuilt and commissioned into the People's Liberation Army (PLAN) Navy under the name Liaoning on 25 September 2012. Its Chinese class designation is Type 001. The ship sailed to Hong Kong in 2017 as part of the 20th anniversary celebrations of the city's return to China, a first visit designed to boost Hong Kong patriotism. Hundreds of Hong Kongers queued all night for free tickets to visit the Liaoning and three other ships, which were open to the public for the first time.
