The Type 99 or ZTZ-99 main battle tank is a third generation Chinese main battle tank. The vehicle replaced the aging Type 88 introduced in the late 1980s. The Type 99 main battle tank was the first third-generation main battle tank to be mass-produced in China. Featuring modular composite armor and tandem charge neutralization (TCD), a 125mm smoothbore gun with ATGM capability, high mobility, digital and optical systems, the Type 99 represents a move toward rapid modernization of the PLA. This tank entered service with the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in 2001. The People's Liberation Army Ground Force (PLAGF) is the sole operator of the Type 99. Three main versions of the Type 99 have been deployed: the Type 98 prototype, the Type 99 and the Type 99A. Deployment of the Type 99 has been curtailed due to its high cost, as the Type 96 tank is the PLA's primary main battle tank.
