Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress
Swamp Fire, RAF Kimbolton, England, April 1944
Delivered to the 91st Bomber Group on 24 February 1944, the prolific future bomber – named after the last three digits of its serial number – immediately went to work, flying its maiden mission the following day. By the end of the war, "Nine-O-Nine" had flown 140 combat sorties (a record for the "Mighty Eighth") without losing a single crew member. He also flew at least 126 consecutive missions without aborting, which is also considered a record. Although scrapped after the war, the Collings Foundation owns a flying B-17 Flying Fortress, currently painted in commemoration of the legendary bomber.
