The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-19 is a second-generation Soviet single-seat, twin-engine fighter, the world's first mass-produced supersonic aircraft. It was the first Soviet production aircraft capable of supersonic speeds in horizontal flight. The rush to put the MiG-19 into service led to a number of serious problems in the initial production. The aircraft's elevators proved ineffective at supersonic speeds, and a fully movable slab tail was tested by the second and third SM-9 prototypes and then included in the main production type, the MiG-19S, which also featured improved armament. A particularly unusual feature of the MiG-19 was the long, chin-mounted pitot tube that could hinge upward to protect it from accidental damage by ground personnel and vehicles.
