Antonov Airlines is a Ukrainian cargo airline founded in 1989 and a subsidiary of the renowned aircraft manufacturer Antonov. It specializes in the international transport of heavy, oversized, or exceptional cargo using a fleet of giant aircraft, including Antonov An-124s and the world’s only Antonov An-225.

The Antonov An-225 (registration UR-82060 and nicknamed Mriya, which means “dream” in Ukrainian) was the largest and heaviest cargo aircraft ever built in the history of aviation. Developed during the Cold War by the Soviet Union, it was originally designed to transport the Soviet space shuttle Buran as well as the massive components of the Energia launch vehicle. Powered by six turbojet engines, the aircraft was 84 meters long with a wingspan of 88.4 meters. It had an empty weight of approximately 285 tons and could carry up to 250 tons of cargo. After its maiden flight on December 21, 1988, it was repurposed following the collapse of the USSR for oversized commercial cargo missions around the world (transporting industrial generators, locomotives, humanitarian aid, etc.). It held multiple world records for the transport of unique cargoes. The only airworthy example was destroyed during Russian combat operations and bombings at Hostomel Airport (GML), near Kyiv, Ukraine, at the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022.
