A supersonic aviation legend and one of the most extraordinary aircraft ever built!  The Tupolev Tu-144, widely remembered as the Soviet counterpart to Concorde, represents one of the most ambitious chapters in commercial aviation history.

Developed by the Tupolev Design Bureau during the technological race of the Cold War, the Tu-144 made its maiden flight in December 1968, several months before Concorde. With its dramatic delta wing, drooping nose and distinctive retractable canards, the Tu-144 was designed to carry passengers at approximately Mach 2.

The later Tu-144D represented an important evolution of the design. Powered by four Kolesov RD-36-51 turbojet engines, it offered improved range and performance compared with earlier versions.

The aircraft represented by this model has a fascinating history of its own. CCCP-77112 made its maiden flight in 1979, but unlike some other Tu-144s, it never entered regular scheduled passenger service. Instead, it completed more than 80 test and evaluation flights before being placed into storage for almost two decades.

Its story could have ended there — but instead it began an extraordinary final journey.

Germany’s Technik Museum Sinsheim acquired CCCP-77112 and organized a remarkable operation to transport the enormous supersonic aircraft from Moscow to Germany. The Tu-144 travelled more than 4,000 kilometres, including an unforgettable journey by barge, before finally reaching Sinsheim.

Today, CCCP-77112 is one of the star attractions of the Technik Museum Sinsheim, displayed high above the museum. What makes the exhibit truly exceptional is its neighbour: Air France Concorde F-BVFB. Visitors can therefore see — and even walk inside — both great rivals of the supersonic passenger era at the same museum. The Tu-144 has stood on the museum roof since March 26, 2001.

Herpa recreates this historic CCCP-77112 in die-cast metal at 1:400 scale, representing the aircraft as preserved at the Technik Museum Sinsheim. Reference 562867 is part of Herpa’s 2026 releases.
