Immediately after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, 391 FS deployed to Ahmed Al Jabar AB, Kuwait, and flew missions of unprecedented duration in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Early in the campaign, the squadron became the first Air Force fighter squadron to use ammunition in theater, flying more than 500 sorties and dropping 515,000 pounds of ammunition. The squadron used almost every type of bomb in the F-15E arsenal, including Mk-82s, GBU-10s, GBU-12s, GBU-15s, GBU-24s, GBU-28s and AGM-130s. In addition, the 391st became the first F-15E unit to use the EGBU-15 in combat.

Boeing F-15 Strike Eagle
Designed to meet US Air Force requirements for an air superiority fighter to replace the F-4 Phantom, the F-15 Eagle first flew on July 27, 1972. Following reviews of proposals, the United States Air Force selected McDonnell Douglas's design in 1969 to meet the service's need for a dedicated air superiority fighter. Since entering service in 1976, it is among the most successful modern fighters, with over 100 victories and no losses in aerial combat, with the majority of the kills by the Israeli Air Force.
