The Ghost of Kyiv is the nickname given to a mythical MiG-29 Fulcrum flying ace credited with shooting down six Russian planes over Kyiv during the Kyiv offensive on 24 February 2022. Various reports, including the Security Service of Ukraine, made similar claims. The Ghost of Kyiv has been credited as a morale booster for Ukrainians during the Russo-Ukrainian War. In February, 2025, the Ukrainian Air Force released a video on social media featuring a MiG-29 painted in a matt-black finish with blue and yellow accents and a white "Ghost of Kyiv" emblem on the nose. Whether this is a one-time experiment, a new approach to aircraft camouflage, or simply a way to inspire Ukrainian forces and the public, one thing is certain - the mysterious black MiG-29 has captured the world's attention, becoming yet another symbol of Ukraine's determination in its ongoing battle for survival.
Mikoyan MiG-29MU1 Fulcrum-C
Designed to help the Soviet Union attain air superiority, the MiG-29 fighter was first flown on October 6th, 1977. The MiG-29, known as the "Fulcrum," has a high-mounted bubble canopy and twin jet engines with diagonal-shaped air intakes and large exhausts. Its tapered, swept-back wings and boom-mounted tail fins give it its classic look. Armed with medium and short-range missiles and unguided weapons for ground and sea-surface targets, the MiG-29's sight is a helmet-mounted system-the pilot chooses his targets by looking at them. Even today the Fulcrum remains a potent adversary, and will remain in service for at least another decade.
