Eastern Air Lines was a scheduled airline in the United States that operated from 1926 to 1991. Before its dissolution, it was headquartered at Miami International Airport in an unincorporated area of Miami-Dade County, Florida.

Douglas DC-9-15 N8910E was delivered to Eastern Air Lines in 1966, joining the airline's growing fleet of short- to medium-haul jets. It served domestic U.S. routes, providing reliable service on busy city pairs throughout the 1960s and 1970s. On February 9, 1979, during a training flight at Dade-Collier Airport, an instructor simulated an engine failure at takeoff, resulting in a loss of control. The left wing struck the ground, followed by the nose and cockpit, causing substantial damage. All five aboard survived, though with injuries, and the aircraft was written off, ending its operational career.
