The USAF (United States Air Force) is the air and space branch of the United States Armed Forces. Established on September 18, 1947, it is the largest and most advanced air force in the world. The Douglas C-47A Skytrain (registration number 42-100558, manufacturer's number) is a military transport aircraft built by Douglas in Long Beach, California. Nicknamed “Buzz Buggy,” it played a pivotal role as the spearhead of major airborne operations in the European theater during World War II. Based in Membury (Berkshire, England) starting in 1944, the aircraft was assigned to the 81st Troop Carrier Squadron and the 436th Troop Carrier Group. It actively participated in major airborne assaults: the Normandy landings (D-Day), Operation Dragoon (southern France), Operation Market Garden (the Netherlands), and the offensives in Germany. It also served during the Berlin Airlift.
