Spirit Airlines was an American low-cost airline that was founded in the early 1980s in Michigan under the name Charter One, offering vacation flights. It became Spirit Airlines on May 29, 1992, and moved its headquarters to Florida. Spirit transformed itself into an ultra-low-cost carrier, charging extra for every service (baggage, seat selection). It became a major player in North America with a large fleet of Airbus aircraft. Due to significant financial difficulties, the airline permanently ceased operations on May 2, 2026.
