The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21bis of the 115th GIAP, based at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan in 1980, represents one of the Soviet Union’s most iconic Cold War fighters during a particularly significant period of its operational history.

Known to NATO as the “Fishbed,” the MiG-21 became one of the most widely produced supersonic fighters in aviation history, with more than 10,000 examples built across its numerous variants. Compact, fast, and rugged, its delta wing, nose intake, and unmistakable profile made it instantly recognizable.

The MiG-21bis was one of the most advanced versions of the family. Powered by the formidable Tumansky R-25 turbojet, it was capable of speeds exceeding Mach 2 and could carry a variety of air-to-air missiles, rockets, bombs, and external fuel tanks in addition to its internal GSh-23L cannon.

The aircraft represented by Hobby Master served with the 115th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment (115th GIAP) of the Soviet Air Force and was deployed to Bagram Air Base during the early stages of the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan. MiG-21s operated in the demanding Afghan environment on missions that included air defense, escort, reconnaissance, and attacks against ground targets.

Its distinctive Soviet camouflage, VVS markings, and operational configuration capture the appearance of a frontline fighter operating from Afghanistan during the early 1980s.
