The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21PFM “5040” of the 921st Fighter Regiment, representing the Vietnam People’s Air Force in December 1972, captures one of the most iconic fighters of the Vietnam War during a period of exceptionally intense air combat over North Vietnam.
Known to NATO as the “Fishbed,” the MiG-21 was ideally suited to North Vietnamese tactics: small, extremely fast, and capable of exceeding Mach 2, it could make rapid interceptions before disengaging. The MiG-21PFM was an important evolution of the design, featuring improved radar and enhanced interception capabilities.
The 921st Fighter Regiment, known as “Sao Đỏ” (Red Star), became one of the most famous fighter units of the North Vietnamese Air Force. Its MiG-21s played an important role in defending Hanoi and North Vietnam against American air operations.
December 1972 was an especially significant period, coinciding with Operation Linebacker II, the intensive U.S. air campaign conducted from December 18–29. Vietnamese MiG-21 pilots operated in an extremely challenging environment against B-52 formations and their extensive American fighter escorts.
Aircraft “5040” wears the distinctive metallic finish associated with Vietnamese MiG-21s of the era, complete with the red-and-yellow VPAF insignia and prominent red 5040 tactical number.
Recreated in 1:72 scale by Hobby Master, HA0004 features primarily die-cast metal construction, a detailed cockpit, configurable landing gear, weaponry, and a display stand for an impressive in-flight presentation.
MiG-21 + Vietnam + December 1972: an aircraft representing one of the most intense chapters of the air war over Vietnam. A history-packed addition for military aviation enthusiasts and Hobby Master collectors.
