Grumman EA-6B Prowler 159586, VAQ-138, USS Saratoga, 1977

Hobby Master 1:72 HA5014

The Grumman EA-6B Prowler BuNo 159586, representing VAQ-138 “Yellow Jackets” aboard the USS Saratoga in 1977, captures one of the U.S. Navy’s most iconic electronic warfare aircraft of the Cold War era.

Developed from the A-6 Intruder, the EA-6B Prowler was instantly recognizable by its extended cockpit accommodating a four-man crew and its distinctive vertical tail. Its real power, however, was electronic. Designed to detect, jam, and disrupt enemy radar and communications systems, the Prowler provided vital protection for carrier battle groups and strike aircraft.

Entering service in the early 1970s, the EA-6B could carry the famous AN/ALQ-99 electronic jamming pods beneath its wings. These systems allowed the aircraft to suppress or degrade hostile radar defenses, helping clear the way for other aircraft in the strike package. This specialized mission would keep the Prowler at the heart of American air operations for decades.

Aircraft 159586 is represented with VAQ-138, the U.S. Navy electronic attack squadron known as the “Yellow Jackets,” during operations aboard the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga (CV-60) in 1977. Its colorful high-visibility 1970s Navy markings give this Prowler a particularly striking appearance compared with the subdued gray schemes adopted in later years.

Recreated in impressive 1:72 scale by Hobby Master, HA5014 captures the distinctive four-seat naval aircraft with a detailed cockpit, electronic warfare pods and external stores, configurable landing gear, and a display stand for an impressive in-flight presentation.

A legendary electronic warfare specialist from the colorful high-visibility era of U.S. Naval Aviation—a standout collectible for carrier aviation, Cold War, and Hobby Master enthusiasts.
