The flagship of the World Aquanaut Security Patrol (WASP), the Stingray is a renowned combat submarine piloted by Captain Troy Tempest and his hydrophone operator, Lieutenant George Lee Sheridan, also known as the telephones. The vessel was considered the most modern submarine of the 2060s and was central to WASP's discovery of numerous recent underwater civilizations, including the city of Titanica, ruled by the despotic King Titan and his warrior followers, the Aquaphibians. Measuring 30 meters in length, the Stingray's nuclear reactor powers a Dual Drumman Ratemaster Hydrojets turbine, giving the vessel a surface speed of 400 knots and a submerged speed of 600 knots. This raw power also allows the vessel to breach the surface and leap out of the water for short distances, a useful means of evading enemies. Stingray can safely dive to a maximum depth of 12.2 meters, comfortably above the deepest known point in the world's oceans. A pair of landing skis can be deployed from below the hull to allow the submarine to land safely on the ocean floor. The submarine is armed with a complement of sixteen Sting missiles and carries several other small vehicles on board for maximum operational flexibility during deployment. Most notable of these are a pair of Aqua Sprites, small submersibles located on Stingray's outer hull on the port and starboard sides. Aqua Sprites have a dry interior for the pilot, detach from the main hull, and allow for closer docking with other vessels underwater. In the event of an underwater emergency, the Aqua Sprites are also the primary means of evacuating Stingray. If the crew leaves the ship in underwater equipment, they invariably use portable underwater bugs to enable faster propulsion and movement underwater. Above the surface, a compact, single-seat hovercraft called a Monocopter is available on board to provide much faster and safer movement over the ever-changing rugged terrain.
