The M10 tank destroyer was an American tank destroyer of World War II. After US entry into World War II and the formation of the Tank Destroyer Force, a suitable vehicle was needed to equip the new battalions. The prototype of the M10 was conceived in early 1942 and delivered in April that year. After appropriate changes to the hull and turret were made, the modified version was selected for production in June 1942 as the 3-inch Gun Motor Carriage M10 (or M10 GMC). It mounted a 3-inch (76.2 mm) gun M7 in a rotating turret on a modified M4 Sherman tank (the M4A2 production variant) chassis. During World War II, the primary user of the M10 tank destroyer was the United States, but many were Lend-Leased to the United Kingdom, Canada and Free French forces.
Designed to fulfill a new combined-arms doctrine that emphasized the need for infantry support and exploitation, the M10 tank destroyer first entered service in Tunisia in 1943. Called "Wolverine" by the British (a name that was never adopted by US soldiers), the M10 was lightly armored and therefore more maneuverable than a typical tank. Its powerful 3" M7 gun fired armor-piercing M79 shot, which made it an effective weapon against enemy tanks. Upon its debut it was capable of destroying most German tanks, but by 1944 the newer German Tiger and Panther proved too formidable for it, though it remained in service through the end of the war.
