Sikorsky MH-60L Black  Hawk

US Army 160th SOAR Night Stalkers, Venom Super 64

Panzerkampf Aircraft 14056PB

The Battle of Mogadishu, also known as Black Hawk Down, took place on October 3-4, 1993 in Mogadishu, Somalia. Part of Operation Gothic Serpent, it was aimed at capturing the lieutenants of warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid. The mission turned into a disaster when the Somali militia shot down two American Black Hawk helicopters, leading to intense urban fighting. Eighteen American soldiers and hundreds of Somalis died. Media coverage of the battle shocked the American public, prompting US withdrawal from Somalia and influencing future military policies. The events were later described in Mark Bowden's book "Black Hawk Down" and the subsequent film adaptation.

"Venom", whose call sign was "Super 64", was the second of two Black Hawks shot down by rocket-propelled grenades.

The 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), abbreviated 160th SOAR (A), is a U.S. Army special operations force that provides helicopter air support to special operations forces. Missions include attack, assault and reconnaissance, and are generally conducted at night, at high speed, at low altitude and on short notice. The MH-60 series helicopters are a highly modified version of the U.S. Army's standard Black Hawk. They are flown exclusively by the 160th SOAR. The primary mission of the MH-60 Black Hawk helicopters is to provide medium-utility support to special operations forces such as Navy Seals, Delta Force and the 75th Army Ranger, in a wide range of environmental conditions.

Sikorsky MH-60L Black Hawk

Developed as a more capable and reliable replacement for the UH-1 Huey, the UH-60 Black Hawk first flew on November 29, 1974.
