The HMS Ark Royal (flag number 91) was a Royal Navy aircraft carrier that served in the Second World War. Completed in November 1938, its design differed from that of previous aircraft carriers. The Ark Royal was the first ship on which the hangars and flight deck were an integral part of the hull, rather than an addition or part of the superstructure. Designed to carry a large number of aircraft, it had two hangar deck levels. The Ark Royal served in some of the most active naval theatres of the Second World War. it was involved in the first aircraft and U-boat attacks of the war and, even more famous, in the search for the German battleship Bismarck. It was torpedoed on November 13, 1941 by the German submarine U-81 and sank the next day. Its wreck was discovered by a BBC team in December 2002, about 30 nautical miles from Gibraltar.r.
