Forces of Valor 1/700  861008A

USS Arizona Pennsylvania-class  USN, BB-39 USS Arizona, Pearl Harbor

On December 7, 1941, at 7:48 a.m. Hawaii time, the American naval base at Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese Empire to prevent the American Pacific fleet from interfering in Japanese military actions planned in Southeast Asia. The attack was led by 353 fighters, bombers and torpedo boats, launched in two waves from a task force of six aircraft carriers (Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, Hiryu, Shokaku and Zuikaku) northwest of Hawaii. The damage inflicted was enormous. All eight U.S. Navy battleships were damaged, four of which were sunk, in addition to damaging or sinking three cruisers, three destroyers, an anti-aircraft training ship and a layer of mines. 188 American aircraft were destroyed; 2,402 Americans were killed and 1,282 wounded. Japanese casualties were minor: 29 aircraft and five dwarf submarines were lost, and 65 soldiers were killed or wounded. A Japanese sailor has been captured. The attack was a profound shock to the American people and led directly to American entry into World War II in the Pacific and European theatres. The next day (December 8), the United States declared war on Japan. There have been many historical precedents of unexpected military action by Japan. However, the absence of any formal warning, especially since negotiations were apparently still ongoing, led President Franklin D. Roosevelt to proclaim December 7, 1941, "a date that will remain in the shadows".
