McDonnell Douglas F/A-18C Hornet

Swiss Air Force 18th Sqn Panthers, #J-5018, Switzerland, November 2009

Hobby Master 1/72 HA3507

The Swiss Air Force received the first of 34 F/A-18 Hornets on January 23, 1997. The Swiss have 3 F/A-18 squadrons (Fliegerstaffel), 11, 17 and 18 with Fliegerstaffel 17 receiving the first aircraft followed by Fliegerstaffel 18 “Panthers” in 1998. Since the dimensions of the F/A-18 are larger than the Mirage III it was replacing the caverns in the mountains where the aircraft are kept had to be enlarged. Fliegerstaffel 18’s J-5018 c/n 1366/SFC018 is the only aircraft that wears their squadron badge.

McDonnell Douglas F/A -18 Hornet

Designed to replace the A-4 Skyhawk and the A-7 Corsair II and in addition to the F-14 Tomcat, the F / A-18 first flew on November 18, 1978. Perhaps best known as the US Navy Blue Angels aircraft, this all-weather supersonic fighter capable of carrying passengers, has many roles, including fighter escort, fleet air defense and close air support. The F / A-18 is a versatile aircraft: it can operate from carriers or ground bases and a single switch converts it to hit mode. During Operation Desert Storm, the F / A-18 demonstrated that during a single mission, an aircraft could serve as both a fighter and a bomber.
