Lockheed YF-12 Air Force-NASA
The YF-12 was an experimental version of the Lockheed A-12 fighter-interceptor reconnaissance aircraft. The YF-12s were used as part of a joint Air Force and NASA research program to study the thermal, structural and aerodynamic effects of sustained high altitude flights. The YF-12 was manufactured mainly from titanium alloy and painted matt black, which allowed it to withstand high altitude stresses and temperatures above 500°F. The YF-12 set a speed record of 2,070.101 mph and an altitude record of 80,257.65 feet in 1965. It was never adopted by the military as an operational aircraft. However, it was a precursor to the SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft.
The only remaining YF-12 is currently on display at the U.S. Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH.
This die-cast metal aircraft is available in 1:115 scale with plastic support and the model is approximately 4 3/4 inches long with a wingspan of 3 1/8 inches.
