Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3

Luftwaffe 1.J/88 Condor Legion, Siebelt Reents, Spain Civil War , Spring 1939

Hobby Master 1:48 HA8718

Late in 1938 when Hptm. Siebelt Reents became commander of 1./J 88 he had the Holzauge (wooden eye) applied in black and white to some unit Bf-109s. The meaning of the "wooden eye" was a Spanish gesture meaning "look out". Reents only recorded one victory while in Spain, a Polikarpov I-16 on February 6, 1939. His aircraft was left to the Spanish Air Force where it flew until 1951. Reents was wounded in WWII and became a Luftwaffe flight instructor. Reents lived to an old age of 101.

Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3

Designed to meet the Luftwaffe's single-seat fighter / interceptor requirements, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 was first used on May 28, 1935. Its all-metal construction, closed hood and retractable equipment made Bf 109 one of the first real modern hunters. of the second world war. This versatile aircraft served in many roles and was the most produced aircraft of the war and the backbone of the Luftwaffe. It was driven by the top three German ace, who won a total of 928 victories. Armed with two guns and two machine guns, the design of the Bf 109 was constantly revised, which allowed it to remain competitive until the end of the war.
