Vought A-7E Corsair II

USN VA-86 Sidewinders, 1973

JC Wings 1:72 JCW-72-A7-005

US Navy Attack Squadron 86 (VA-86) Sidewinders was the new designation given to VF-921 on 1 July 1955. The squadron transitioned from the F7U Cutlass to the A-4 Skyhawk before becoming the first operational squadron to transition to the A-7 Corsair II in June 1967. The Sidewinders deployed with the A-7 on several occasions to various Nimitz-class aircraft carriers. The squadron was renamed Navy Strike Fighter Squadron 86 (VFA-86) on 15 July 1987 when it transitioned to the F/A-18 Hornet.

Vought A-7E Corsair II

Designed to replace the A-4 Skyhawk with a longer range, higher load aircraft, the A-7 Corsair II made its first flight on September 27, 1965. This aircraft entered service during the Vietnam War and later became one of the few US Navy aircraft to serve in the US Air Force. It had state-of-the-art technology; it was one of the first aircraft to use a turbofan, an internal navigation system and a "heads-up" display. Towards the end of its career, the A-7 was used for pilot training and was parked outside hangars to draw the attention of Soviet spy satellites to the emerging F-117.
