The Sukhoi Su-17 (NATO code name "Fitter") is a variable-wing fighter-bomber developed for the Soviet Army. Developed from the Sukhoi Su-7, the Su-17 was the first tilt-wing aircraft to enter service in the Soviet Union and was fitted with modernized avionics. Variants of the Su-17 intended for export were designated as the Su-20 or Su-22. Produced from 1967 to 1990, the Su-17/20/22 series had a long career and was operated by numerous air forces, notably those of the Russian Federation, the former Soviet republics, the former Pact of Warsaw, countries of the Arab world, Angola and Peru. The Russian Federation withdrew its fleet in 1998.
