USN VA-93 Blue Blazers, NF301, USS Midway, 1979

JC Wings 1:72 JCW-72-A7-006

The US Navy's Blue Blazers Fighter Squadron 93 (VF-93) was commissioned in March 1952 but was redesignated Attack Squadron 93 (VA-93) in September 1956. The squadron transitioned from the F9F Cougar to the A-4 Skyhawk before moving to the A-7 Corsair II in 1968. In 1976, the squadron dropped the designation "Blue Blazers" and adopted the name "Ravens". She deployed numerous times with the A-7 on the USS Midway before being disbanded on August 31, 1986.

Vought A-7E Corsair II

Designed to replace the A-4 Skyhawk with a longer range, higher load aircraft, the A-7 Corsair II made its first flight on September 27, 1965. This aircraft entered service during the Vietnam War and later became one of the few US Navy aircraft to serve in the US Air Force. It had state-of-the-art technology; it was one of the first aircraft to use a turbofan, an internal navigation system and a "heads-up" display. Towards the end of its career, the A-7 was used for pilot training and was parked outside hangars to draw the attention of Soviet spy satellites to the emerging F-117.
