Lockheed P-38L Lightning

Designed to meet the USAAC's demand for a high-performance fighter, the P-38 Lightning first flew on January 27, 1939. The easily recognizable P-38 featured dual boom, two turbocharged engines, a central nacelle for the pilot, counter-rotating propellers and a tricycle landing gear. It was used for dive bombing, level bombing, ground strafing and photo reconnaissance. When equipped with drop tanks, it was also used as a long-range escort fighter. The Lightning's armament was grouped in the nose of the aircraft, which allowed the pilot to have a direct line of sight on the target and gave the weapons a "bump saw" effect useful for strafing.
