The Ukrainian Air Force bought the Su-24 in the Soviet era and uses it mainly for precision strikes against land and naval targets. Su-24s have been upgraded with improved avionics and weapons systems, increasing their combat effectiveness. They have been used in a variety of conflicts, including the current conflict with Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian Air Force Su-24 aircraft have been fitted with Storm Shadow missiles provided by the UK, enhancing their long-range strike capabilities. These modifications enable precision attacks on high-value targets over 250 kilometers away, a strategic advantage in current conflicts.

Developed as a tactical bomber and reconnaissance aircraft to replace the Yak-28, the Su-24 flew for the first time on July, 1967.
