McDonnell RF-101C Voodoo

56-0001, Robin Olds, RAF Bentwaters, England, 1964

Hobby Master 1:72 HA9303

Robin Olds took command of the 81st Tactical Fighter Wing at RAF Bentwaters, England, on September 8, 1963. At the time, the 81st TFW was flying the F-101 Voodoo, which was used both as a tactical nuclear bomber and as a conventional bomber in support of NATO. Olds formed a demonstration team for the F-101 using pilots from his squadron, without command authorization, and performed at an Air Force open day at Bentwaters. He claims that his Third Air Force superior tried to court-martial him, but USAFE Commander General Gabriel P. Disosway authorized his removal from 81st TFW command and transfer to Ninth Air Force headquarters at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina. In September 1966, Olds was assigned to command a squadron of McDonnell Douglas F-4C Phantoms in Southeast Asia.

McDonnell RF-101C Voodoo

Designed to meed a USAAF requirement for a long-range turbojet powered fighter, the F-101 was first flown (as the XF-88 prototype) on October 20th, 1948. Its initial mission as bomber escort was modified during development to include that of all-weather interceptor, nuclear fighter-bomber and photo reconnaissance aircraft. Reconnaissance variants saw extensive use during the Vietnam war while interceptors remained in service with several Air National Guard units until 1982. Ultimately, the Voodoo's carreer was rather short-lived although it did help pave the way towards the highly successful F-4 Phantom II that replaced it.
