Vought A-7P Corsair II Attack Aircraft

Portuguese Air Force"Portugal"

The 459th Fighter Squadron was activated in August 1943 with Lockheed P-38 Lightnings and joined the 80th Fighter Group, whose three Curtiss P-40 Warhawk squadrons had arrived in India in June. The group completed training in the China-Burma-India theater and entered combat in September. It supported Allied forces in the battles for northern Burma and the advance to Rangoon, bombing and strafing troop concentrations, supply dumps, and lines of communication. The squadron helped protect bases in India from which Air Transport Command cargo planes flew missions over the Hump to supply forces in China. It patrolled Allied airfields and attacked Japanese airfields from which enemy interceptors operated. The 459th was awarded a Distinguished Unit Citation (DUC) for destroying 119 enemy aircraft between 11 March and 19 May 1944. Lockheed P-38J Lightning

Designed to meet the USAAC's demand for a high-performance fighter, the P-38 Lightning first flew on January 27, 1939. The unmistakable P-38 featured twin booms, two turbocharged engines, a central pilot's nacelle, contra-rotating propellers, and tricycle landing gear. It was used for dive bombing, level bombing, ground strafing, and photo reconnaissance. When equipped with drop tanks, it was also used as a long-range escort fighter. The Lightning's armament was clustered in the nose of the aircraft, giving the pilot a direct line of sight to the target and giving the weapons a "bump saw" effect useful for strafing.

General Characteristics, Armament, & Performance details are located inside the flap of the box.
