The PLAAF's J-11A, a Chinese variant of the Russian Su-27 Flanker, entered service in the early 2000s and underwent significant upgrades by 2015. The J-11A features an indigenous radar, avionics, and weapon systems, improving upon the original Su-27 design. By 2015, the aircraft had become a core component of China's air superiority forces, with enhanced capabilities for air-to-air combat, ground attack, and precision strikes. The J-11A also benefited from the integration of domestic technologies, such as advanced engines and sensors, which allowed it to operate effectively in modern combat scenarios. It marked an important milestone in the PLA Air Force's modernization efforts.

Designed by the Soviet Union to challenge the superiority of fourth-generation U.S. fighters such as the F-15 Eagle, the Su-27 made its first flight on May 20, 1977. This single-seat Mach-2 fighter was equipped with the Soviet Union's first operational fly-by-wire system. The aircraft is very large compared to the MiG-29, its closest Soviet counterpart, but it is built with a high percentage of titanium, which helps minimize its weight. It is exceptionally agile and is perhaps most famous for its "Cobra" maneuver, which consists of a short, sustained level flight with a 120 degree angle of attack, often performed at air shows.
