Messerschmitt Bf 110E

Luftwaffe 7./ZG 26, 3U+AR, Italy 1941

Hobby Master 1:72  HA1817

In 1941, Zerstorergeschwader 26 (Destroyer Wing 26) operated the Messerschmitt Bf 110E in the Mediterranean, including missions over Italy, North Africa, and Malta. The Bf 110E, an improved version of the heavy fighter, featured stronger engines, reinforced armor, and the ability to carry bombs, making it effective in the fighter-bomber role. Based in Sicily, ZG 26 conducted escort, interdiction, and ground-attack missions against British forces. The unit faced increasing resistance from RAF Hurricanes and Spitfires, leading to heavy losses. By late 1941, ZG 26's effectiveness declined, and the Luftwaffe shifted focus toward North Africa and the Eastern Front.

Messerschmitt Bf 110E

Designed to meet a Luftwaffe requirement for a long range, multipurpose fighter, the Bf-110 was first flown on May 12th, 1936. Fast and well-armed, the Bf-110 lacked maneuverability-a flaw that became glaringly obvious during the battle of Britain, when Bf-110s suffered heavy losses and were withdrawn from battle. Redesigned Bf-110s were equipped with radar and enjoyed great success as night fighters, eventually becoming the Luftwaffe's primary aircraft in that role. Most of Germany's night fighter aces flew the Bf-110 at least once, and some of them-including top German night fighter ace Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer-flew it exclusively.
