Grumman F-14A Tomcat

USN VF-124 Gunfighters, US Bicentennial 1976

Hobby Master 1:72  HA5259

VF-24, known as the "Fighting Renegades," was a U.S. Navy fighter squadron that celebrated the Bicentennial of the United States in 1976 by painting one of its F-14 Tomcats in a special red, white, and blue scheme. This iconic aircraft featured bold stars and stripes across its fuselage and tail, commemorating the nation's 200th anniversary. The VF-24 F-14, part of Carrier Air Wing 9 aboard USS Constitution (CV-67), was a symbol of U.S. naval aviation pride. The squadron had a rich combat history, participating in operations during the Cold War and beyond, while also serving as a training and frontline unit.

Grumman F-14A Tomcat

Designed to carry the formidable long range AIM-54 Phoenix missile, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat was first flown on December 21st, 1970. Made famous by the Hollywood film Top Gun, the F-14 replaced the F-4 Phantom II as the US Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter. Its design includes a variable geometry wing that can sweep back for high speed supersonic intercepts and forward for improved positioning in air to air dogfights. Nicknamed "Bombcat," the F-14 spent much of its late career in an air-to-ground role, carrying the Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) system.
