In Top Gun: Maverick, enemy Rogue Nation has built a new high-end fighter unlike anything the US Navy has ever seen. Although Rogue Nation's 5th-generation fighter is never named, it's almost certainly based on the Russian Sukhoi Su-57 Felon. The U.S. Navy tells Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell that the F/A-18E/F Super Hornets they'll be using for the mission will be no match for this new fighter.

By 2019, the Su-57 was still undergoing testing and evaluation, but it was already clear that it would likely carry these advanced missiles to engage enemy aircraft at both medium and long ranges. Its stealth characteristics, combined with the advanced R-77 and R-37 missiles, give the Su-57 a significant edge in beyond-visual-range (BVR) combat.

Designed as a fifth generation stealth fighter, comparable to the F-22, the Su-57 was first flown as the PAK FA on January 29th, 2010.
