Under the gaze of a world captivated by man's relentless efforts to conquer the skies, Louis Blériot became one of the most famous men on the planet when the whole world learned that he had made the first nonstop crossing of the English Channel on July 25, 1909. Landing at 5:12 a.m. within sight of Dover Castle, he also won a handsome prize of £1,000.
Designed by Louis Blériot with the help of Raymond Saulnier, the X1 made its maiden flight on January 23, 1909. The X1 was equipped with a 28 horsepower REP engine and a wing mounted on the shoulders and reinforced by struts, using a warping system for lateral control, similar to that of the Wright Flyer. It was aboard this aircraft that Blériot won the £1,000 prize offered by the Daily Mail newspaper for the firs
