Landing at 5:12 a.m. within sight of Dover Castle, he also won a handsome prize of £1,000.

Bleriot XI Monoplane

Designed by Louis Blériot with the help of Raymond Saulnier, the X1 made its maiden flight on January 23, 1909. The X1 was equipped with a 28 horsepower REP engine and a wing mounted on the shoulders and reinforced by struts, using a warping system for lateral control, similar to that of the Wright Flyer. It was aboard this aircraft that Blériot won the £1,000 prize offered by the Daily Mail newspaper for the firs
