VF-102 Diamondbacks, known as the “Diamondbacks,” represents decades of naval aviation power since its creation in 1955.
From its early days flying the McDonnell F2H Banshee to its evolution into the iconic Grumman F-14 Tomcat—and later the F/A-18F Super Hornet—the squadron has always operated at the cutting edge of combat aviation.
Deployed in September 2001 for Operation Enduring Freedom, VF-102 quickly proved its dominance: over 5,000 combat flight hours, 680 bombs dropped, and tens of thousands of pounds of precision-guided munitions delivered with unmatched accuracy.
Setting the benchmark for operational intensity, it logged more combat missions and ordnance than any other F-14 squadron, while also achieving an impressive 159 consecutive days at sea.

Grumman F-14B Tomcat
Designed to carry the formidable long range AIM-54 Phoenix missile, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat was first flown on December 21st, 1970. Made famous by the Hollywood film Top Gun, the F-14 replaced the F-4 Phantom II as the US Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter. Its design includes a variable geometry wing that can sweep back for high speed supersonic intercepts and forward for improved positioning in air to air dogfights. Nicknamed "Bombcat," the F-14 spent much of its late career in an air-to-ground role, carrying the Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) system.
